Design Museum – London

London’s best day out

The Design Museum in London is one of the best places to spend a few hours to get a little bit of inspiration from. In this calendar year Terence Conran and Louboutin have both exhibited there.

Iconic imagery

With the recent small PE day the our fair city hosted it was only right that the museum took note and put on a little sporty aesthetic thingy together. Designed to Win covers the machinery, the clothing, the records and the athletes involved. Brits have become cycling obsessed since the TdF and the Lympics and there are some examples of the amazing machinery used. Plus some old school bikes from by gone years.

Angel shoes

The exhibition touches on the brands involved with making big time sport and also features pieces from McCartney, Yamamoto, House of Holland and Hussein Chalayan.

Girl I’ll House you

On the second floor you have the Digital Crystal with Swarovski working with a variety of artists, illustrators, designers et al to create a myriad of amazing crystal installations. Then the resident room has a variety of new up and coming talent displaying their wares.

Crystal bizniss

My particular favourite from Yuri Suzuki in collaboration with Masahiko Shindo using one of the most iconic pieces in British design history to create a wireless radio.

Listen, dance and plan your route

SF likes this week

Some stuff that SF likes but just has no time to write lots about

Love a little optical illusion. Working either for a promotional campaign, a gallery, street art piece or a greeting card. Props to Fabio D’Altilia for creating Point of View

Look closer

SF loves Lego. I think everyone does. If you have little people in your family then you will know about building it and that it can takde up most of Christmas day therefore avoiding speaking to boring and / elderly members of your extended family. It is a god send…. and Nathan Sawaya is clearly a don

The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach

It is the end of festival season pretty much as much as this is a small relief it is also the sign of colder times. SF spotted this pictorial Woodstock feast and it made SF want to get naked, drop LSD, bump uglies, listen to guitary music and wonder around a field. Thanks to Wall to Watch for this

E-Pizza from Dubai

StandardFact loves a bit of creativity, is enamored by imagination, all about the convenience and partial to a pizza or two. Like many creatures of habit the order is always the same. Triple pepperoni in case you were wondering.

Well this idea takes all of the above, and then makes it into one technological yet uber simple solution to the age old problem of having to speak to the guy on the other end of the take out line who invariably is on a shite phone line, speaks only rudimentary English and takes an age to get your simple order wrong.

Dubai based pizza company Red Tomato Pizza came up with the ingenious idea of creating a fridge magnet that links to your WiFi, simply press the button on the magnet and it sends through your usual order to the restaurant. A simple text to confirm message is sent and hey presto! Pizza to your door and minimal effort used.

This idea is amazing because of it’s simplicity, the technology is there and it has been harnessed in a project that cost only $9k. The world coverage, SM buzz and kudos has paid this back many times over. On the back of this innovative solution numerous offers for  franchises around the globe.

Just shows that a good idea does not need to break the bank

Funny Art-Soul

Cuddle up

SF has been a lil quite in recent days, this bloody work thing combined with bust shoulder and no transport. However there are other ways to share a little visual love.

Post smiles

Great website I stumbled upon recently Walls to Watch, has a great array of art, photography, graf, stencils, pottery etc etc. A lot of it seems pretty random and has been sent in from around the world.

Rolling doubles

The personal and possibly limited view of StandFact is that what you see should make a difference, and hopefully move you, currently the top of the list of things to look for are things that raise a wee smile, cause a titter and maybe make you release a little bit of wee with glee

Choca bloc

Well you know how much I love lego…

Ich liebe Berlin. That is all

Mit Zug

Best cities in the world…. London, New York and Berlin. But for me Berlin takes it after another lost weekend in the city of Sin. The one that the local government said they wanted to bill as ‘aber sexy’. Well the locals they might not agree but to many foreigners it is.

Paint & Sunshine

Berlin is the party capital of the world, somewhere along the line Berliners decided that parties, lax drug laws and sex would be the key to making it the go to location. They were right.

Artistic influence

Berlin is a melting pot with history, immigration, culture, art and banging techno. At the moment there is a little unrest in the city due to Gentrification and the locals rebelling against the hipsters and development of less desirable areas driving the rents too high for the locals who were there before skinny jeans, colourful tattoos and apple macs. Berlin has a very high unemployment rate, the highest homeless rates in the whole of Germany and the average wage is pretty low, the rents are also low which is what has attracted so many English, Italians, Spanish and French creative types. The mix of these cultures has made some areas so desirable to tourists who bring in money, it is a catch 22.

Humble abode

Now I am not going to go into details but rest assured it involved sampling some of what makes Berlin so > insert here <

And I ate here… typical

A little of home

Kanye + Porn = Mind Boggling

Eyes at actual size

It is Friday and therefore there should a level of craziness, a little bit of something smutty, something to get the excitement going for two days of freedom.

People I give you Kanye West and his take on what porn should be in collaboration with Anja Rubik. The man, sorry The Miracle has moved on from fashion, acting, music, directing and general operations of legend to turn his hand to helping the world to get off.

I love this because it is arty, kinky and dark but it feels more like a Madonna video from the early 90’s I can not imagine to many guys sticking this one to beat the meat… can you?

Another example of our King of Everything giving us an insight into the crazy world of the Jeezy.

Graffiti paintball machine

So now it seems there is a machine which takes away the craftmanship of graf and stenciling. Like a paintball machine that is the bastard love-child of Ben Eine and Robot Wars.

While I am all for technology, pushing the world forward creating new stuff to wow and open our fragile little minds, surely somethings are best left to us humans. Such as making suits, making food, making sex and painting.

DIY paintballing

It is called a Facadeprinter by some clever German chaps at Sonice Development GmbH, name sounds rather grand and means nothing to me. I guess it might be useful for putting art in those tough to get to places such as the top of the Shard

Big stencils quickly

Watch this

I have a bit of a watch fetish, so far I have over 40 and that number will only continue to swell, there is no doubt about that.

I think a watch tells you a lot about a person, a timepiece speaks volumes about your style and character and also shows you have some appreciation for time and keeping to it.

I always find it weird that people only have one watch when you have different shoes, shirts and jackets for different occasions. I mean you do not have to go as crazy as me and have one in every colour of the rainbow, but then again why not?

Here are a few I have seen recently that may well be joining my watch draw…

This is a social music video

Music videos are still important to a record succeeding, it is a difficult one to get stand out in, there is no point throwing money at the situation anymore. Big budgets do not work, just ask the big boys who failed to make an impression at Cannes Lion this year.

Tiled out

Now you have to think social and make sure you are putting the consumer right at the centre of your content and comms, MNDR a NYC based band did exactly that, creating a music video that puts you in the middle of it, communicating directly and taking information from your Facebook page to make it relevant through an app. Working at fourclops in the shape of Eli Stonberg and Jeff Greco and recording the gig at Webster’s Hall in March.

my MNDR

Brands have been doing it for a while and it can work, getting a music video that takes the listener on a journey and make it personal might not sell a download on iTunes, probably will not get you to go to a gig they are playing but it will make them stand out and probably encourage you to keep an eye out for the next creative way they try and communicate with you. You may share on Facebook, Twitter (probably not on Google+ because who the hell uses that) or even tell your mates down at the pub on a weekend, they might buy it or share it. Either way the message is spreading… Good ideas and creativity spreads Fact.
