Berlin has some pretty amazing buildings, some pretty out there ideas have come to life, some I would bet my eye teeth on not being created anywhere else in Germany, let alone the world. Once again Berlin wins for otherworldly weirdness.
The Bierpinsel (or Beer Brush, go figure) was made in 1972 and originally was meant to look like a tree, it contained bars, restaurants and a night club but sadly it is no longer accessible. Well it is but you have to be a bit hardcore on the breaking and entering front.
The Bierpinsel stands at 46ft and is located above Schloßstraße in an area called Steglitz, full of nondescript high street shops – think of Elephant & Castle circa 2001 but with Currywurst stores or Bracknell now without the faint stench of piss and paupers, actually the piss is well and truly there.
The Bierpinsel rises above all the other buildings like a giraffe drawn by someone who has been at the schrooms for a week before putting felt tip to paper. It looks about as at home here as Keith Flint on acid in a flower arranging class, that is something of it’s romantic brilliance.
Despite it’s obvious appeal and general cool, this building seems destined to fail, countless owners have failed to bring it back to life and ended bankrupt. A bunch of graf artists gave it a lick of paint back in 2010 but we have no idea who, it looks a little bit like Malarky but it ain’t.
SF have made claims for places to be good for a little knees up, but surely this is the Daddy of the Macdaddy . We are starting a whip round to buy it… send your cheques, piggy banks, bonds, Woolworths vouchers et al
