Everyone has a Sweet Toof

All around the east end there are pieces by Sweet Toof, they are not exactly difficult to spot, seeing as they are usually huge and pretty bright.

On my daily mooching around London today I cycled a different route and saw this parked up under one of the arches near the Hoxton Tube station. It would seem that Street Art is now on the move as well, maybe it is for a Sweet Toof roadshow, or maybe not.

Sweet Toof also leaves pieces around the place for eagle eyed Londoners to keep, a mate of mine found a copy of the Metro with the cover completely transformed with the trademark Sweet Toof design. Lucky get!

Taped Up – Max Zorn

On Blue Peter it was all about sticky back plastic, and let’s be honest most of the stuff they made was pretty shite. I was never a fan it was always about Art Attack with the legend that is Neil Buchanan (who follows me on twitter, claim to fame time)

Anyways I digress, Max Zorn has taken the idea of working with tape and created a different form of street art. He cuts and shapes tape in layers and shapes to create art pieces which then use light to bring the imagery to life. Zorn uses windows or street lights to display the imagery and although I have not seen them first hand I think it would make a great addition to my fair city as the sunshine has just started shining. It is almost like the street art take on church stained glass windows.

Saw this today in Hackney, do not know too much about it as yet. Found something referring to Medellin, which I thought was the Columbian drug cartel…. I’ll try and find out some more, unless anyone can fill in the gap?

This time it is Nikita Nomerz, loving these, for some reason they remind me of the faces from Thomas the Tank Engine but all the same brilliant use of the world around us. Making everyday objects into pieces of art. You often see brilliant art but these Russians take it to another level using the shames of objects as the basis. I wonder what they could do with the Gherkin….

Sister wall

The Italian lady who resides on Rome but has formally lived in the UK, in London. Her art has a very feminine and emotive feel to them than many pieces you see on the London streets do not display. The look in the eyes of the characters seem to tell a story and one which the viewer can draw their own conclusions to. There are a few pieces from AliCé in London but they are not easy to find… Check out Blackhall Street in Shoreditch…. they might still be there

Making a spectacle

Street art should, in my opinion build on the surroundings and make them better, it should not stand out for the sake of standing out, it should never merely blend either. A tricky tightrope you might say.

This is the first time I have come across Pavel Puhov but I love the way he toys with his surroundings in order to take everyday mundane objects and makes them into something different and artistic. Everyday objects such as spectacles or a torch can be something quite enchanting

NZ Police get in on the Stencil Art Tip

Down under the Police have decided, if you can’t beat them, join them. In a rather bold move masterminded by M&C Saatchi the New Zealand Police have taken to their creating their own street art in order to try and recruit new cops.

In theory I like this as it subverts the norm and could actually bring the establishment some more understanding and kudos…. but then again there is the flipside. For one it maybe smacks of hipopcracy, does this mean that people caught spraying graf in NZ will be commended on their line work? Secondly, the designs created by Otis Frizzell are hardly original and pretty much rip off work by Banksy…. how much kudos would that give your average savvy graffiti artist?

In other news Police in London were spotted skinning up L plates in Brixton  so they can get the numbers on the drug squads up and in Amsterdam the female officers are wearing their uniforms for ‘evening work’ in the Red light district offering an extra special service.

 

Is this a new Banksy? And more to the point does anyone really care?

A comment on Materialism? #artforall ahem!

Don’t get me wrong…. I am not a Banksy hater (I even sold a Banksy for 1p in a previous life) but he also isn’t the most popular with some people such as Robbo and many people think he just ripped Blek le Rat. While the film he released called Exit Through the Gift Shop featuring Thierry Guetta was interesting and nicely put together, it also cheapened the Street Art idea because Mister Brainwash managed to put on this frankly ridiculously huge exhibition and sell pieces for thousands of $$ without actually really being an artist.  It also gave a poor impression of the American art buying public who were just mindlessly bidding for pieces, some of which they had barely seen let alone tried to understand the piece.

I am not for one minute claiming to be an art aficianado, far from it, I just like pretty things and I like what I like, just merely posing the question…. Is Banksy relevant and credible anymore?
