Fight the gentrification Nazir

A little of what you like....

Nazir Tanbouli is a resident of East London, he has worked here amongst his collective from 1995 so has probably see the changes to Whiston Road more than most.

Upstairs boarded up.... downstairs a little doodling

Recently Whiston Road saw a few pieces of new art to brighten up the slowly but surely closing housing estates. The estates are in disrepair and I can only imagine the council are ignoring them until the very last resident gives up the ghost and moves on. All around this area shiney new housing developments are going up. Makes you wonder where the people living there at the moment are going to go?

Bit blurry... but you get the idea

And another one....

Also makes you wonder where the local graf artists are going to to paint if everywhere is new and clean…. gentrification here we come, expect a Pret on Broadway Market in the next 6 months

Phil Collins is a hero – Fact

Friends of StandardFact, the guys at id-iom clearly understand the huge cultural and musical importance of the great man. His drumming was second to none and he featured on numerous other artist’s albums because he was so good. Plus he dumped a wife by fax…. the man was always ahead of the curve.

Art + Phil Collins = Groovy

The idea behind this piece is to obviously bring the genius of Phil Collins to a wider audience, but additionally the guys were using a bit of a subtle mind trickery, by using the lyric of ‘When I’m feeling blue, all I have to do, is take a look at you, then I’m not so blue’ from the classic ‘A Groovy Kind of Love’ on a blue background they are planting the blue message in peoples minds, hopefully forever.

A vintage year

This little piece is in Brixton so I am imagining it will have the same effect on the number of sales from that area of PC  purchases in a similar way that a certain chocolate bar did to ‘In the Air Tonight’

More from our id-iom friends very soon….

Too many sweets will rot your toof

I think I might be having a bit of a sugar overload here. I can not turn a corner without seeing another piece by Mr. Toof. You have to give him credit though he goes far and wide and does not mind hitting some pretty random places.

Spotted the toof?

This one was in a warehouse carpark on the way to Stratford and pretty damn hard to find, I only spotted it out of the corner of my eye.

Simple rules of Hackney….

The writing is on the wall

I would like to say right now that this is not my opinion, I am only quoting something I have spotted on my travels around London…

You do have to love this though…. short, sweet, spelt correctly and with a slight musical reference. This had lead me on a new mission… to find tags and comments that may not seem that artistic but that make me chuckle.

If you can find any then I want them… regional comedy much welcomed

Another wasteland in East London

Still lots to be done tho...

I found the Graffiti Graveyard off Broadway and then found this on the way to the Olympic Stadium. It is a little more rough round the edges and could do with a few more pieces so if you are an artist then drop me a line and I’ll break my rule about revealing the location.

East wall

Can you spot our friend Sweet Toof in the above shot?

I like the fact that when we are inundated by sodding tourists, all getting lost and wondering into the rougher parts of Hackney to get robbed by our friendly youts, they will at least be able to see some pretty decent art along the way.

As they say… Welcome to Hackney

Olympic Standard Sweet Toof

Sweet croc

It has been ages since I saw our old friend Sweet Toof. He is pretty damn prolific as we have already figured out and Sweet has been beating a path to that white elephant in the Eastend room otherwise known as the Olympic Stadium.

Tunnel Toof

If you take a mosey down from Victoria Park towards the stadium there are a few examples of his work plus a couple which have been started and not finished. The route to the Olympics is a pretty rich place to graf right now, so many open spaces and it will be the perfect place to showcase his wares to a huge amount of people throughout the summer.

Hazardous Toof

Sweet tag

On thing that did strike me though is while they are making some of it look nice for all those tourists… some of it looks rather dilapidated, and I don’t mean shabby chic either

Urban Art Sale at Bonhams – Sounds like a rips off

le Moss - Banksy

It is on the 29th in London at Bonham’s and if you have a spare £000’s then maybe you would like to invest in an overpriced piece by the world’s fave stencil artist Banksy. Some of these pieces are quite famous and desired, I quite like the Kate Moss one, because I love le Moss, really love le Moss.

The other one I like features an iconic model as well, it is by Jef Aerosol and features Twiggy, it is called ‘Is London Still Swinging?’

Jef Aerosol

If I had that much money I reckon I would just buy a wall in London and then make it available for artists to use, maybe on a 3 month rotation and then have a constantly updated piece that everyone can see. The all you would need to do is get a decent camera and take a shot of each finished piece and then you have a nice coffee table book or even blow up the prints for at home.

Just a thought, if not and you want the original and nave this cash in a box under your bed waiting for that rainy day you could buy a Banksy, something by Blek le Rat or maybe a D*Face orig.

D*Face

Other reason to write this post was if you put Banksy in a post then it ramps up your visitor numbers and I thought I’d see how many new followers I could get…… muuuuhhhhaaaa
